Three things moved this week that are worth knowing about: Google Ads is still auto-upgrading Search campaigns to AI Max through 30 September, Google's September spam update started rolling out on 24 September, and Cloudflare now lets you stay in search while blocking AI training.

Google Ads is still auto-upgrading Search campaigns to AI Max through 30 September

Through 30 September, Google Ads is progressively moving eligible Search campaigns that use campaign-level broad match or Automatically Created Assets onto AI Max. Legacy Dynamic Search Ads are not in this September wave. Their auto-upgrade was pushed to February 2027. After migration, defaults differ by what you had before, so search term matching and text customisation may turn on without anyone clicking a button. If Ven runs your Google Ads, we are already watching this. If you manage Search in-house or with another partner, list campaigns for AI Max columns this week, review search terms and auto-generated copy for brand and compliance risk, and tighten negatives and brand exclusions before the window closes.

Google's September 2026 spam update is live. Check Search Console before you panic

On 24 September Google started rolling out its September 2026 spam update globally. It can take up to about two weeks to finish. This is the fourth confirmed spam update of 2026. Google has not named a new tactic. It is a notable improvement to automated spam detection. Sites that breach Google's spam policies can rank lower or drop out of results, including generative surfaces. If your organic traffic wobbles over the next fortnight, open Search Console by date, compare against 24 September, and check for thin AI content, doorway pages, scraped material, and deceptive redirects. Clean sites usually need no campaign change. Wait for the rollout to finish before rewriting strategy. If Ven looks after your SEO, we are already monitoring this.

Cloudflare lets sites stay in Google, Bing and Apple search while blocking AI training

On 15 September Cloudflare replaced its blunt "Block AI Bots" switch with separate Search, Training and Agent controls, plus a new Disallow AI Training setting. You can stay discoverable in search while refusing training use of mixed-use crawlers. Applebot, Googlebot and Bingbot are treated as accountable and honour (or have committed to honour) the split. Existing "Block AI" customers were migrated automatically, typically with Search allowed and Training disallowed. New domains get updated defaults. If your site sits behind Cloudflare and Ven manages hosting or the CDN, ask us to confirm the settings. If you manage it yourself, spend ten minutes in Security and AI crawl controls this week: keep Search allowed unless you mean to hide, decide Training based on your content strategy, and check robots.txt so WordPress or plugin rules are not fighting Cloudflare. This is separate from Google's Search Console generative-AI opt-out. Training is not the same as AI Overviews.
